Juniata women’s soccer opens 2012 play with shutout victory

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College women's soccer team opened its 2012 season with a dominating 3-0 win over Thiel College at Winton Hill Field on Saturday afternoon.

The game-winning goal came in the 26th minute off the head of junior Jenna Rodrigue (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) who put in the back of the net "Abby Wambach style" from a Cara Spiess (Spring City, Pa./The Hill School) corner kick.

Ten minutes later, freshman Michaela Lacek (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern) earned her first collegiate goal as she dribbled passed the defense and shot it into the low right corner of the goal.

Rodrigue again found the net in the 50th minute off a Paula Pryor (Westbrookville, N.Y./Burke Catholic) pass in front of the goal's mouth where Rodrigue lifted it above Thiel (0-1) keeper Mary Oakey's head.

Juniata (1-0) outshot the Tomcats 32 to two in the contest, with Pryor ripping eight and Rodrigue owning six shots.

Freshman Kristin Twardowski (Emmaus, Pa./Southern Lehigh) got the start in the goal and earned her first collegiate victory and shutout for her 90 minutes of errorless play.

The Eagles resume play against Lycoming on Monday, September 3 at 4:30 p.m. on Winton Hill Field.
