Juniata women’s soccer and Rutgers-Newark finish deadlocked at 1-1

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – 110 minutes of soccer proved to be insufficient time to decide things between Juniata College and Rutgers University-Newark, as the Eagle women's soccer team and the Scarlet Raiders battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Sunday afternoon in Huntingdon, Pa.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net over the first 45 minutes, with the Eagles (7-4-1) holding a 5-3 edge on shots taken in the opening frame.

Juniata's Erin Eddinger (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) broke the scoring drought in the 60th minute. Eddinger took a ball played by Christine Schott (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) across the width of the field, and buried it in the far side of the goal from about 20 yards out.

Rutgers-Newark knotted the game at 1-1 in the 78th minute, on a play that began with Whitney Huber's corner kick. Angela Neves got her foot on the loose ball amidst a crowd in Juniata's six-yard box, and put a shot past Eagle keeper Kristen Penska (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) at point-blank range.

Neither squad recorded a single shot on goal over the 20 minutes of overtime soccer.

Penska finished the day with four saves, while Rutgers-Newark keeper Kat Renteria also recorded four saves. Juniata outshot 11-9 over the course of the game, but Rutgers-Newark had a 7-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities – including four in the second half alone.

Juniata's next contest will be on Saturday, Oct. 18, when the Eagles face the University of Scranton in the Landmark Conference game.
