Spartans Ground Eagles in Season Opener

YORK, Pa.- The Juniata women's basketball team lost on the road to open the season at York College, 70-42, Friday evening on day one of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Laney Gerdich scored the first bucket of the season for the Eagles on a putback. A Haily Sherman three gave JC an early 5-3 lead on the next trip down the floor.

The teams were scoreless over the next three minutes until the Spartans made two layups in quick succession to take the lead back. A Laney free throw was the final point for the Eagles of the quarter, as they trailed 11-6 after one.

Buckets from Sarah Betts and Steph Emert, along with two more Gerdich foul shots, helped JC get back within three, 15-12, with under five to go in the half.

Emelie Nonemaker found Deja Gillo for a three, and Olivia Berg converted a free throw for the final JC bucket of the half. Juniata went into the locker room trailing 24-16 at the break.

The hosts outscored JC 31-13 in the third quarter, as they drained five threes to build a 55-29 lead by the end of the third quarter. The Spartans did not let the Eagles get close in the final quarter.

Sherman totaled 10 points to go with six rebounds and one steal. Miller amassed eight points, two rebounds, and a steal, while Berg tallied eight points, four rebounds, and two steals.
