Balanced Attack Leads Women's Basketball Past Greyhounds to 3-1 in the Landmark

Gracie Stauffer
Gracie Stauffer tallied 14 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks for her eighth double-double of the year.

BETHLEHEM, Pa.-The Juniata women's basketball team had four players hit double digits as they won, 63-53, at Moravian Saturday afternoon at Johnston Hall.

Madison Colyer (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) found Gracie Stauffer (Loysville, Pa. / West Perry) inside for a layup following a Moravian layup. The hosts scored the next four points before a Stauffer block led to a Kaeana Rebert (Hanover, Pa. / South Western) layup off a pass by Averie Hess (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore) to make it 6-4. Cassie Mock (Martinsburg, Pa. / Central Martinsburg) drilled a triple off a pass by Stauffer and Rebert followed with a three of her own to make it 10-6 with just under three minutes to go in the contest. Two layups by Stauffer, both off passes by Mock were sandwiched around two Greyhound layups as Juniata led, 14-10, after one.

The Greyhounds started the second quarter by splitting a pair of foul shots. Two Stauffer foul shots followed by a steal and a layup by Larissa Leonard (Three Springs, Pa. / Southern Huntingdon) made it 18-11. Moravian scored on a layup, but JC countered with a Grace Long (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) jumper off a feed from Colyer. The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes, as the Greyhounds scored inside to get within seven with two and half minutes to go. Juniata closed half strong, as Stauffer scored inside twice, with the first bucket off a pass from Megan Haines (Bloomsburg, Pa. / Bloomsburg). Colyer rattled home a jumper in the final 14 seconds to send the Eagles into the half up, 31-18.

Juniata slowly pushed their lead to as many as 15, midway through the third but Moravian wouldn't go away as two free throws pulled them within 12. Mock found Rebert for a layup and Taylor Vrabel (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) for another before Stauffer converted a pair of shots from the charity stripe to put Juniata ahead by 18 heading into the final frame.

The Greyhounds hit back-to-back threes and scored inside to get within 10 and force a quick Eagle timeout. A Colyer jumper after Rebert grabbed an offensive rebound pushed the lead back to 12. Juniata kept the Greyhounds at bay as Moravian couldn't close the gap. A three pulled them within seven with three minutes and 15 seconds to go. A Long layup on the other end push the lead back to nine, and Mock drilled a three from the top of the key to essentially ice the game.

The Eagles held a 50-40 edge on the glass and held Moravian to 26.9% shooting from the floor along with 23.8% shooting from three.

Juniata returns home to host Goucher, Wednesday at 7:00.
