Eagles Dominate Frostburg 84-57 in Home Opener

HUNTINGDON, PA – With a dominating first half performance, the Juniata women's basketball team defeated the Frostburg State Bobcats 84-57 Wednesday night.

The Eagles shot 75 percent behind the three-point line in the first half and went into halftime with a 42-23 lead.

Juniata's offensive effort remained fairly balanced throughout the game, as twelve players put points on the board for the Eagles.

"It's good to have a total team effort," head coach Danny Young-Uhrich said. "We've had a lot of different people step up and so far I like what I see."

Rachael Anstine (York, PA / Dallastown) totaled 15 points on the night, followed by Kelly Leamer (Altoona, PA / Bellwood) at 14. Maria Photiades (Abottstown, PA / Delone Catholic) and Dani Atkinson (Lancaster, PA / Lancaster Catholic) also put up double-digits with 10 points on the night.

Photiades and Anstine each went 3-3 from the free throw line to lead the Eagles to an overall free throw percentage of 75 percent.

Following a strong first half in three-points, the Eagles finished 10-22 on the night.

"Our intent wasn't to play comfortable the second half," Young-Uhrich said. "We know our kids can go out and do what they did the first half, so it's really about learning to maintain that."

Juniata shut the Bobcats down defensively, putting up 28 defensive rebounds, 10 steals and two blocked shots. Their aggressive play resulted in 24 personal fouls.

"We have to be smart because we're limited in the post," Young-Uhrich said. "We need to learn to play with an aggression that's not going to get us into foul trouble."

The Eagles forced 23 turnovers and were able to score 28 points off those opportunities.

They held a 43-9 advantage in points off the bench and a 23-15 advantage in second chance points on their way to victory against Frostburg.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season. They are next in action on Nov. 28 when they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to face the St. Vincent Bearcats at 2pm.
