Softball Earns Split as Swank Blanks Bears, Muskies Hault Eagles

CLERMONT, Fla.– The Juniata softball team picked up a 3-0 win over Coast Guard before losing to Lakeland 4-1 on day two of their Florida trip Monday afternoon.

In game one, Maryn Swank pitched a shutout, going the distance and allowing just four hits, three runs, and a walk.

She found herself in trouble in the first with runners at second and third with two outs, but she struck the next batter looking to get out of the inning. She got help from her defense in the third as she induced a ground ball with the bases loaded, and Emily Eutsey fielded the ball cleanly at third before getting the force out at home to keep the Bears off the board. She wouldn't allow a runner past second base the rest of the game.

Offensively, Juniata scored all its runs in the third inning. Caleigh Love led off with a single, advanced to second on an error, and stole third. Ashley Robuck doubled to left to score the first run of the game and advanced to third on a passed ball. Reagan Goldsmith walked and stole second. Alex Douglass laid down a bunt, which scored Robuck, and Goldsmith advanced to third. Kassandra Roush's ground out to second allowed Goldsmith to score.

In game two against Lakeland, the Muskies scored two runs on three hits and an Eagle error in the third and added two more in the fourth on three hits.

Love drove in the lone Eagle run in the seventh as she drove in Dani Berlin

Juniata continues their Florida jaunt with a pair of early games as they take on Milwaukee School of Engineering at 9:00 am and Suffolk at 11:15 am.
