Eagles Offense Explodes in Game Two Against Blue Jays to Earn Split

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata softball split against visiting Elizabethtown today. The Eagles fell, 3-1 before having a dominating hitting performance winning, 10-2 in game two.

Elizabethtown got on the board first as they scored one in the first. The next two innings were scoreless, but in the fourth the Eagles tied it up 1-1. Maggie Peck (Philipsburg, Pa. / Philipsburg Osceola) started off the fourth with a double to right center. Peck then stole third. With a ground out to the pitcher, Peck ran home. In the top of the sixth, the Blue Jays scored two more runs to win the game. 

Cate Baran (Tyrone, Pa. / Tyrone Area HS) pitched all seven innings for the Eagles as she recorded a career high nine stikeouts. 

Game two was different for Juniata as they doubled their hits, the Eagles totaled 14 hits in their, 10-2 win against Etown. Juniata started off hot, as they scored three runs in the first to take an early lead. Alaney Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa. / Glendale) was walked and then advanced to second on a ground out to third base. Maya McLeod (San Diego, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day School) singled to left center to advance Vereshack to third and then McLeod stole second. Peck hit a home run to center field to bring in McLeod and Vereshack. 

Elizabethtown scored their only two runs of the game in the second. In the third inning, Juniata kept things going as they scored three more runs to extend their lead, 6-2. McLeod started off the inning with a single to left field and then advanced to second on a ground out to second base. McLeod advanced to third on a wild pitch. Catherine Miller (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon Area) was walked and then stole second. The Eagles had runners on second and third with Kassandra Roush (Indiana, Pa. / Marion Center Area HS) at the plate. Roush singled to the shortstop which advanced Miller and brought home McLeod. Roush stole second and then Ruthie Betts (Hawk Run, Pa. / West Branch Area Jr./Sr. H.S.) singled up the middle to bring home, Roush and Miller. 

To start off the fourth, Vereshack singled to right field and then stole second base. McLeod singled to right field to allow Vereshack to score. To start off the sixth inning, Juniata led, 7-2. Baran started off the inning with a walk and then Reagan Goldsmith (Middletown, Del. / Middletown) pinch ran for Baran. McLeod singled to left center, advancing Goldsmith. A ground out to third base advanced McLeod and Goldsmith. Peck singled to advance McLeod and bring home Goldsmith. Then, Peck stole second base. Roush doubled to right center to bring home Peck and McLeod to end the game, 10-2. 

McLeod went 4-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Peck went 2-4 with two runs scored, four RBI, a stolen base, and a home run. 

Juniata will travel to Elizabethtown, Monday, April 12th starting at 2:00 PM to complete their series. They will not play tomorrow due to potential rain.
