Softball Falls and Ties to Penn St.-Altoona in Doubleheader

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata softball team fell, 10-3 and tied 6-6, against Penn St.-Altoona in a doubleheader on a sunny Thursday afternoon.

In game one, Penn St.-Altoona got on the board first as they scored once run in the first and one more in the second. In the fourth inning, Alyssa Shedlock (State College, Pa. / State College) was walked. Jennifer Carthew (New Paris, Pa. / Chestnut-Ridge HS) reached on a bunt and Shedlock advanced to second. Shedlock and Carthew advanced on a ground out to the catcher before Kerigan Ammerman (Alexandria, Pa. / Juniata Valley) smashed a three-run homer, to put JC ahead 3-2. The Lions retook the lead with a five run sixth and tacked on three more in the seventh. 

Ammerman went 1-3 with three-run homer.

In game two the Eagles started off strong with three runs in the first inning. Allie Baney (State College, Pa. / State College Area) singled to the shortstop. Carthew singled up the middle and Baney advanced to second. Molly Ulrich (Homer, N.Y. / Homer Central) was walked, advancing Carthew and Baney. With the bases loaded, Abby Ebright (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East HS) doubled and then advanced to third on the throw. Ulrich, Carthew and Baney all crossed home plate. 

In the third inning, the Lions got on the board with one run, trailing behind the Eagles, 3-1. In the fifth inning, the Eagles scored two more runs to extend their lead, 5-1. Ammerman reached first base on an error by the third basewoman and then stole second. Baney singled to center field and Ammerman advanced. Baney stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch while Ammerman crossed the plate. An Ebright homer made it 6-1. 

Penn St.-Altoona scored two in the sixth and a three-run home run in the seventh tied up the game at 6-6. The game ended at nine innings with final score 6-6. 

Ebright went 2-3 with four RBI, a double and a home run. Carthew went 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Baney went 2-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base. 

Juniata returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Susquehanna for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
