Softball Falls to Coast Guard 7-6

CLERMONT, Fla.- Juniata softball returned to the field after an off day to play Coast Guard on Wednesday morning. The Eagles got out to 6-0 lead but the Bears rallied to win 7-6. Juniata falls to 3-2 while Coast Guard improves to 4-1.

 

JC led 5-0 in the first inning. Alyssa Shedlock (State College, Pa./State College) led off with a single. Allie Baney (State College, Pa./State College) was hit by a pitch and then Kerigan Ammerman (Alexandria, Pa/Juniata Valley) singled through the left side to load the bases. Abby Ebright (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Shedlock. Jordan Wahrenberger (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) singled to short to plate Baney. Chrisi Lerchen (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) followed with a single to right that scored Ammerman. After Alicia Regnault (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) fouled out, Jennifer Carthew (New Paris, Pa./Chestnut-Ridge) singled in a run and Brooke Ridenour (Thurmont, MD./Catoctin) followed with a RBI double to score the fifth run.

 

The Eagles added to their lead with a run in the third inning as a Carthew sac bunt scored Regnault. Carthew let up five runs in the bottom of the fourth as Coast Guard made it a 6-5 game.

 

Lerchen came on in relief and pitched the last two innings. She gave up two runs but only one earned. The winning run came with one out in the sixth on a RBI double from the Bears' Kayla Sowers.

 

Carthew lasted four innings and surrendered five runs on five hits. She walked one batter.

 

Lerchen was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a run batted in. Ammerman was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Regnault and Ridenour were both 1-for-3 with doubles.

 

The Eagles are back in action this afternoon against New England College. Juniata defeated the Pilgrims 16-8 on Sunday. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
