HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College softball team was firing on all cylinders in game two of its Landmark Conference doubleheader against Drew University Sunday afternoon to earn the split and improve to 2-6 in conference play. Juniata (5-22) dropped game one 4-1, but came out strong in the nightcap and held on for the 8-7 win. The Eagles have now won two of their last four games.
Junior Katie Schroeder (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown) had another breakout performance. She went 4-for-6 on the day including a triple and a home run to finish with a 1.500 slugging percentage. Freshman Allie Baney (State College, Pa./State College Area) was second on the team in hits with three, respectively.
Juniata's starters, sophomores Holly Bettinger (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and Aly Smith (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union), held Drew to a .242 team batting average. Smith finished the day with a team low 2.33 ERA after going nine innings and striking out four.
The Eagles return to action this coming Tuesday, April 15 in a doubleheader against Penn State Harrisburg. The first game begins at 3 p.m. Juniata swept the Lions 11-5 and 11-6 when they met last season. They return home on Saturday, April 19 to face Susquehanna University and honor their two seniors: Rachel Smith (Martinsburg, Pa./Homeschooled) and Lydia Gorba (Portage, Pa./Portage Area).
