WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – The Juniata College softball team dropped a pair of tough contests Thursday at the Dot Richardson Spring Games. Juniata (2-6) opened the day with a 17-1 loss against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and could not hold off a late rally by The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and dropped game two 10-9.
Both junior Katie Schroeder (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown) and sophomore Paige Dennison (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) went 3-for-6 from the plate with one run. Schroeder was 1-for-1 in stolen bases and Dennison added two more RBI to her season total. Freshman Allie Baney (State College, Pa./State College Area) also earned three hits on the day. She recorded the team's only triple and finished with a .714 slugging percentage.
Sophomore Aly Smith (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union) earned both decisions on the mound. The lefty went 4.2 innings and struck out two batters. Smith tied Dennison with a team-high two RBI and hit a two-run double against TCNJ that helped spark a one out rally to push the Eagles in the lead. But TCNJ was able to score the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning to earn the win.
Juniata closes out play at the Spring Games Friday, March 14 in back-to-back games against Haverford and No. 18 Rowan. The matchups are the Eagles only night contests of the week, starting at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
