Juniata Upended by Susquehanna in Landmark Tournament Opener

SELINGSGROVE, Pa. – The Juniata College softball team fell to Susquehanna 8-0 Friday morning in the opening game of the Landmark Conference Tournament at Susquehanna's Sassafras Field.

Juniata (10-17), played solid defense, committing no errors. However, the Eagles couldn't keep up with the Crusaders bats.

The Eagles only hits came from senior Steph Frith (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and freshman Jasmine Assad (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional). Juniata could not capitalize on their opportunities, leaving runners on in the first, fourth, and sixth innings.

Freshman Aly Smith (McVeytown, Pa./Mount Union) came in to pitch with two outs in the third inning. She kept the Crusader batters off balance, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out one batter in 3.0 innings work.

Juniata will play in Saturday's 9 a.m. elimination game, against Moravian College. The Eagles dropped both ends of a doubleheader against the Greyhounds when they met on April 20. In game two of the doubleheader, Juniata was able to score two runs on five hits, while giving up four runs on six hits. Senior Jenn Ashcraft (Bellefonte, Pa./State College Area) hit well against Moravian, going 2-for-3 in the series.
