Softball Earns Spot in Landmark Tournament

Softball Earns Spot in Landmark Tournament

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – After finishing her inaugural season at the helm with a 4-6 record against Landmark Conference opponents, head coach Sam Kszepka has led the Juniata College softball team to its first postseason berth since 2010.  Juniata (10-16) is the No. 4 seed and will face No. 1 seed Susquehanna University on Friday, May 3 at 11 a.m.

The Eagles were pegged to finish last by the league's preseason poll, but have split all but one of their conference doubleheaders this season.  They are third in the league in triples and stolen bases.

Susquehanna and Moravian had already clinched their berths, but the Eagles were battling with Scranton and Catholic for the final two spots. If Scranton or Catholic took a game from their opponent, they earned a spot in the tourney.  But if either was swept, Juniata would be in and they would be out.

Catholic took game one from Moravian to earn the No. 3 seed and Scranton dropped its first game to Susquehanna, leaving the door open for the Eagles.  Up 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Susquehanna starter Ashely Cole struck out the side swinging to secure the No. 1 seed and knock Scranton out of the postseason.

Juniata is 2-4 all-time in the Landmark Tournament.  They are 0-3 when facing the Crusaders in the postseason.
