Juniata Scores 18 Runs In Day One of Snowbird Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Juniata College softball team started its 2013 season off with a bang.  The Eagles hit four home runs and three doubles across two games to open play at the Snowbird Classic Monday morning.  Juniata defeated Gettysburg 4-1 before going on to rout Penn College 14-0.  The Eagles haven't scored 14 runs in a single-game since 2005.

Freshman Aly Smith (McVeytown, Pa./Mount Union) had a breakout debut performance.  She went 4-for-6 on the day with a home run, a grand slam, two doubles and six RBI.  She pitched the complete game shutout of Penn College after striking out 11 and giving up only two hits.

Also making a statement was fellow freshman Jasmine Assad (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional).  As the second batter of the game against Gettysburg, she sent the first pitch of her collegiate career over the fence to open scoring.  She finished the day 3-for-7.

Senior Kelsea Decker (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) joined the home run club after leading of the second inning off against Gettysburg with a deep ball.  She pitched a complete game, striking out four to earn her first win of the season.

Juniata continues play at the Classic on Tuesday, March 12.  They will face Mitchell at 9 a.m., followed by SUNYIT at 11 a.m.
