Juniata softball takes split out of twinbill with St. Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. – Juniata College junior Jackie Morley (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) drove in two runs, including a solo home run, to lead the Eagle softball team to a 2-0 win over St. Vincent College in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Latrobe, Pa.

The Eagles could not complete the sweep however, as St. Vincent posted a 5-1 win over Juniata in the second game of the doubleheader.

In game one, Juniata scored one run in the second inning when Tara Carl (Duke Center, Pa./Otto-Eldred) reached on a double, then scored on Morley's single to left-center. Morley belted a solo shot over the fence in right-center field in the seventh inning to round out the Eagle scoring.

Morley finished the game 3-for-3, with a pair of singles to go with the round-tripper.

Juniata starter Alyssa Erb (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) surrendered just three hits while striking out five Bearcat batters on her way to the seven-inning complete game win.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two, when Carl singled home Sarah Eckard (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg), who reached on a lead-off single.

St. Vincent responded with a game-tying run in the third, then took the lead with a three-run uprising in the fifth inning. Shannon Ballantyne April Hawkey both reached on singles, then scored on Maura Wahl's two-run double. Wahl later advanced to second on Ashley Whipkey's single, and was awarded home following an obstruction call on Juniata's Carl at third base.

The Bearcats added a single run in the sixth to solidify the win.

Rachel Nagy (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and Eckard each had a pair of hits in the loss, while Carl went 3-for-3 in addition to the one RBI.

Juniata starter Pam Mansell (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) turned in a complete game performance, allowing 12 hits with one strikeout.

Juniata hosts Penn State-Harrisburg on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. on Weis Field in Huntingdon, Pa.
