Pat Shawaryn stepped up and took the reigns to the Juniata men’s volleyball program in the middle of the 2014. Under Shawaryn, the Eagles were ranked No. 1 in the country by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) coaches poll for four consecutive weeks, closed their regular season 11-1, won their second straight Continental Volleyball Conference championship, and advanced to the program’s first NCAA Division III national championship match.
The 2013 AVCA men’s volleyball national assistant coach of the year also had four student-athletes earn All-America and all-conference honors in 2014. The 2004 Juniata graduate and four-time varsity letterwinner returned to his alma mater to assist the 2011 men’s season and started assisting the women’s program in 2012.
Prior to returning to Juniata, Shawaryn coached the girl’s varsity volleyball squad at Hempfield High School from 2009-2011. Over his three seasons at the helm, he guided the team to a Pennsylvania AAA State Championship crown in 2010, second place in 2011 and third place in 2009. Additionally, the team took seven tournament titles and three Section, League and AAA District championships. Thanks to the success of the program, Shawaryn was named Coach of the Year for all three seasons.
Prior to his head coaching role at Hempfield, Shawaryn led the Damon’s Volleyball Club team to back-to-back top ten finishes at the 2005 and 2006 Boys National Championships, while also coaching three players to All-American status.
Shawaryn was a member of the Juniata 2004 Molten Division III national championship team as the squad’s libero. He graduated with a bachelor’s in politics with a concentration in law and philosophy, and minored in criminal justice and history.
