HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's volleyball team got to 10 wins on the season with their 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-16) win over visiting Geneva, Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium.
Three Golden Tornado attack errors and a Joe Fick (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) ace had the Eagles up 4-0 early as they looked to open up an advantage early, but Geneva had other ideas as they eventually pulled even at 12-12. The Golden Tornados pulled ahead for a moment at 13-14, but a service error, an attack error and a Kevin Duffy (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle HS) kill gave the Blue and Gold the lead back, 16-14. An Eagle five-point surge, sparked by kills from Fick and Duffy along with a Quinn Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Shadow Ridge) ace made it 21-15. Geneva put together a 5-0 run of their own to get back within one, 21-20. It was tight down the stretch, as two straight points from the visitor wound up making it 24-23. Following an Eagle timeout, Fick smashed a final kill to end set one, 25-23.
Geneva pulled ahead early in the second set, but the Eagles quickly pulled even behind an ace from David Hibner (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) at 5-5. The teams went back and forth with a service error by the Eagles tying things at 8-8. Two Fick kills and an ace along with an attack error by Geneva had the Eagles up by four and forced a Golden Tornado timeout. Peterson and Leland Hacecky (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) notched a kill apiece which made it 14-8. An attack error momentarily broke the run, but the Eagles kept coming. Another kill from Hacecky followed by block by him and Hibner with another Fick kill mixed in made it 17-9. The Eagles cruised to a 25-13 set two win.
The final set of the match saw the Eagles get ahead by three and nurse their lead as they slowly pulled away. It was by far their best set in terms of hitting percentage as they hit .480 to end the match, 25-16.
The Eagles return to action on the road at Lancaster Bible, Friday at 7:00.
