Eagles Declaw Bobcats

Greenville, Pa.- The Juniata men's volleyball team got back to their winning ways with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) win at Thiel, Tuesday evening at Beeghly Gymnasium.

Quinn Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge) had 15 kills, six digs and two aces. Joe Fick (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) had eight kills and six digs, Sean Cavanagh (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) tallied five kills and four digs while Daniel Voronov (Northbrook, Ill./Glennbrook North HS) had eight digs.

Juniata led 6-5 early in the opening set, before a kill from Cavanagh, a block from Matt Schaeffer (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) and Mahlon Bender (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and a Thiel attack error stretched the lead to four. The Eagles continued to surge, and pushed their lead to 19-11 with an ace from Peterson. The Tomcats pulled back within five at 21-16 before the Eagles took the final four points and the first set.

The second set was much tighter, with the teams tying four times en route to a 10-10 score. The Tomcats tied things again at 11-11 before a Peterson kill and several errors by Theil made it 15-11. The Eagles looked to cruise from there, with an ace and two kills from Peterson giving JC set point at 24-18. The Tomcats took the next three points before an attack error gave the Eagles the second set.

The third set saw the Eagles take a 5-4 lead before a 6-0 push from Theil gave them their first lead of the match at 10-5. Juniata responded with a 14-5 run of their own that gave them a comfortable 19-15 lead. The Tomcats managed to tie the score at 22-22, trying to force a fourth set but JC wasn't having it. Kills from Stephen Ash (Elk Grove, Calif./Consumnes Oakes)  and Peterson made it 24-22. A block from Ash and Andrew Knapp (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) ended the match.

Juniata will travel to Eastern Mennonite, Friday at 4:00.
