Eagles Drop 3-0 Decision to Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va.- Following a nearly two-week layoff, the Juniata men's volleyball team returned to the court as they faced off against Continental Volleyball Conference rival Marymount on Friday night. The Saints got the best of the Eagles as they won by the score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22).

 

The Eagles fall to 11-8 overall and 5-2 in the CVC while remaining in third place. The Saints improve to 13-6 and 7-1 in the conference and stay in first.

 

Juniata led 5-4 early in the first set but Marymount came back to take the lead. After an 8-8 tie, the Saints led for the rest of the set. Leading 16-14, the Saints used a 9-5 run to pull away from the Eagles and win the frame.

 

Once again, JC had an early lead, 8-6, in the second set but MU recovered to go ahead 10-9. The Eagles tied the set at 12-12 but a 6-1 Marymount run put the hosts on top 18-13. With the score standing at 19-15 in the Saints favor, MU scored the last six points to win 25-15 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

 

The Eagles would not go down with a fight. JC briefly led 14-13 before the Saints countered to go ahead 16-14. Juniata was able to stay with its opponent and nearly match point for point. The Eagles got to within 21-20 but the Saints would outscore them 4-2 to pull out the set and match win.

 

Quinn Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge) led with 12 kills. Matt Schaeffer (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) picked up 23 assists. Matt Vasinko (Loyalhanna, Pa./Derry Area) tallied five digs as did Peterson and also contributed three assisted blocks. Kyle Seeley (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) had a team-best .357 hitting percentage and laid down five kills, three assisted blocks, and two digs.

 

Juniata travels to Harrisonburg, Va. for a CVC match with Eastern Mennonite tomorrow with start time at 12:00 p.m. The Eagles also faced York (NY) in a non-conference match at 2:00 p.m.
