PITTSFORD, NY- The Juniata men's volleyball team wrapped up the two-day Golden Flyer Invitational with a match against Medaille College on Saturday. The Eagles defeated the Mavericks in straight sets 3-0 to improve to 5-4 on the season.
Juniata had a one-point lead, 6-5, early on in the first set but used a 6-1 run to go up 12-6. The Mavericks would hang around and the JC lead was at 18-14. The Eagles put Medaille away with a 7-2 run to take the frame and lead 1-0 in the match.
The second set was tightly contested early on and the Mavericks would eventually spring ahead 17-14. JC wrestled the lead away with a 5-1 run to go up 19-18. A 4-1 Medaille run gave it a 22-20 lead but the Eagles answered with five straight points to pull away and win 25-22.
The third set was tied at 8-8 and Juniata broke away with a 6-1 run to go ahead 14-9. Medaille was able to get to within a point of tying, 17-16, but Juniata would outscore the Mavericks 8-5 as it took the set 25-21 and won the match.
The Eagles had an overall hitting percentage of .357. Quinn Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge) led the offense with 13 kills and hit .417. Kyle Seeley (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) added seven kills on nine attacks for a .778 hitting percentage. He was named to the All-Tournament Team. Michael Young (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake Village) totaled 21 assists. Morgan Pierce (Carpinteria, Calif./Cate School) had a strong defensive effort with six digs and three assists blocks.
Juniata opens Continental Volleyball Conference play next Friday at Rutgers-Newark. Match time is at 7:00 p.m.
