SPRINGFIELD, OH.- The Juniata men's volleyball team wrapped up competition at the Jim Coleman Invitational hosted by Wittenberg University. The Eagles had two tough matches that went to five sets but lost to Mount St. Joseph and the host Tigers.

Against the Lions, the Eagles took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-21. The Lions came back with two 25-23 wins in set three and set four before taking the final set 15-7.

Mount St. Joseph was ahead by as much as 17-11 in the first set.  The Eagles rallied to get to 21-17. A run of four straight points tied the set up at 21-all. JC edged out the Lions with a 5-3 run to close out frame to take a 1-0 lead.

Much like the first set, the Lions took the lead in the second frame by starting out with five straight points. The lead grew to 9-3 until the Eagles rallied to get within two points, 10-8. MSJ leaped ahead 17-11 but Juniata countered with a huge 10-0 run to go up 21-17. The Lions were able to get to within 24-21 but JC closed the door as Chad Albert's (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) kill gave the Eagles the win.

The third set saw Juniata take the early lead for the first time in the match. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the set as the Eagles' lead was no more than two points. The frame was tied 22-22 before the Lions tallied two points to go up 24-22. A service error gave the Eagles a point but MSJ won the match on a Chris Heron (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) service error.

In the fourth set, JC led 22-19 and seemed poised to take the match. The Lions tied it up at 22-all. Juniata tied it at 23 but the Lions took the last two points to knot the match at 2-2.

The final set saw Juniata go ahead 1-0. MSJ took control from there as it won the set and the match.

Quinn Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge) led the offense with 12 kills. Kyle Seeley (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Matt Vasinko (Loyalhanna, Pa./Derry Area) both added 10 kills. Ryan Shelton (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) totaled 40 assists. Brendan Smith (Fuquay-Varina, N.C./Fuquay-Varina) paced the defense with 11 digs. Shelton had nine digs. Seeley also picked up five assisted blocks.

In the second match, the Eagles had firm control in the first set as they claimed it 25-13. The second set saw the Tigers lead for throughout until Juniata tied at 24-all. Wittenberg picked up the last two points to tie the match at 1-1.

Juniata rebounded in the third set as it broke away from a 21-18 lead to get the last four points it needed to forced a deciding fifth frame. The Eagles got ahead 6-3 in fifth set but the Tigers rallied to go up 7-6.  Juniata got its lead back as it went up 10-7 but again the Tigers took back the lead. JC led 14-12 and was one point away from taking the set and match but Wittenberg would get the last four points it needed to get the win.

Albert paced the offense with 15 kills. He also was a presence on the defensive end with four assisted and three solo blocks. Peterson totaled 14 kills and had four service aces. Seeley contributed 11 kills. Shelton topped his effort from earlier with 47 assists. Smith led in digs with 25.

Albert was named to the All-Tournament Team. Head coach Pat Shawaryn praised his play and said he proved to be an All-American.

Overall, Shawaryn said his team did some things well but admitted that not playing last weekend hurt the Eagles. It was not the weekend he wanted but said that his team learned a lot from this experience.
