Eagles Handle Mustangs in Three Sets

HUNTINGDON, PA- The Juniata men's volleyball team hosted Stevenson University in a Continental Volleyball Conference match on Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium. The Eagles had little trouble with the Mustangs as they won 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-15). Juniata improves to 22-5 overall and 10-1 in the CVC. Stevenson falls to 15-13 and 6-5 in the CVC.

 

Paul Kuhn (York, PA/Central York) led Juniata offensively with 10 kills. Matt Elias (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) tallied 23 assists and 12 digs. Justin Waldorf (Eden, NY/Eden) added 11 digs. 

 

The Eagles led early in the first set 11-6. The Mustangs were able to close the gap to tie and eventually go ahead 14-13. JC broke a 16-16 tie with a 5-1 run to go up 21-17. The Mustangs were able to get to within two points, 23-21, but Juniata got two points on a service and an attack error to win 25-21.

 

The two teams traded points for most of the second set. After Stevenson tied the game up at 16-16, the Eagles pulled away with three straight points to go up 19-16. With the score standing at 23-20, a kill by Joe Bortak (Jeannette, PA/Penn Trafford) and a service ace by Kuhn allowed JC to get the winning points and claim the frame 25-20.

 

In the third set, the Eagles led 10-9 and ripped off five points to leap ahead 15-9. JC was ahead 20-15 and went on a 5-0 run in the end to take the set 25-15 and win the match.

 

Juniata will host a CVC tri-match tomorrow afternoon. The Eagles play Eastern Mennonite at 1 p.m. and conclude with Hilbert at 5 p.m.
