No. 3 Juniata Sweeps Final Day of CVC East Divisional Play

HARRISONBURG, Pa. – Juniata men's volleyball swept competition in day two of the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) East Divisional play at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) Saturday.  The No. 3 Eagles defeated hosts EMU 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 27-25) before taking down Cairn 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-12, 25-20) to improve to 16-7 overall, 2-1 in league play.

 

This was Juniata's 24th straight win over EMU and fourth straight over Cairn, formerly Philadelphia Biblical.  The Eagles offense was led by sophomore Paul Kuhn (York, Pa./Central York) who finished with 21 kills.  Junior Alex McColgin (Buffalo, N.Y./Hamburg) also had a good day at the net.  He hit a team best .531 averaging 4.75 kills per game. 

 

Pacing the attack was freshman Matt Elias (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) who had a career day.  He finished with 74 total assists in the two matches.  Sophomore Joe Bortak (Jeannette, Pa./Penn Trafford) continued his defensive dominance at the net recording a team-best nine blocks on the day.

 

Juniata vs. Eastern Mennonite
Kuhn led all attackers with a match-high 12 kills and had a match-high three aces.  Freshman Chad Albert (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) put down a career best seven kills committing just one error while Bortak hit a team best .750 after earning six kills on eight swings with no errors.  Bortak also had a match-high six blocks.

 

Juniata vs. Cairn
Elias had a career-best 44 assists in the Eagles win over Cairn, primarily feeding McColgin who finished with a match-high 19 kills.  The freshman also tied Albert with a match-high six blocks, a career-best for Elias.  Juniata lost the first set, but regrouped and took the next three.

 

The Eagles returns home on Tuesday, March 19 to face PSU Behrend.  This will be their first time the programs will meet.
