Juniata’s Sato Wins at ITA Championships

FREDERICKSBURG, VA- Juniata men’s tennis player Sho Sato (Shiga, Japan) won all four of his matches to claim the championship in his draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Championships. The three-day event was hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

 

Sato never lost more than three games in any of the four matches that he competed in. He defeated his first opponent 6-0, 6-3 to move on to the quarterfinals where he advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph. Sato prevailed 6-2, 6-0 in semifinals and 6-1 6-2 in finals.

 

Dean Polisena (Adelaide, Australia, Saint Ignatius) won his first set in the main Championships draw 6-2, but dropped his next two sets 7-5, 7-6 in a hard fought battle.  In the consolation round, Polisena won 8-2 and lost a super tiebreaker 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in the second round.

 

Matyas Kohout (Krhanice, Czech Republic / Gymnasium Jizni Mes) claimed his singles draw 6-2, 6-3 before falling in 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Fellow teammate Bryan Gregory (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) won in a super tiebreaker 6-0, 4-6, 10-5 and won another tiebreaker 6-7, 8-6, 10-4 before bowing out in the finals. Logan Moore (Chadds Ford, PA/ Unionville) got all the way to the final round of his draw before dropping a 6-2. 6-2 decision.

 

In doubles play, the duo of Kahout and Polisena won in the opening round of 64 8-6 before falling in the round of 32 8-0.
