Mona Breaks Two Pool Records, but Eagles Fall to Goucher and Scranton

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's swim team fell to Goucher and Scranton on senior day.

Freshman, Hunter Mona (State College, Pa. / State College Area) broke two Juniata pool records today. He broke the previous 800 freestyle record by five seconds and the previous 400 freestyle record by three seconds. 

The Eagles started off the meet with a third place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Brady Ott (Silver Spring, Md. / Good Counsel), Martin Berger (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon Area), Matias Berger (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon Area), and Dima Kunstbeck (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona Area HS) clocked in at 2:01.11. Mona claimed first place in the 800 freestyle as he came in with a time of 9:06.71. Mona finished 1:30 ahead of the second place finisher. In the 200 freestyle, Kunstbeck took fourth clocking in at 2:18.95. 

Ott had a strong first place finish in the 100 backstroke as he touched the wall at 1:04.32, three seconds in front of second place. Mar Berger finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke coming in with a time of 1:17.88. Mona claimed another first place in the 200 butterfly, he clocked in at 2:21.89. 

In the 50 freestyle, Ott claimed another first place out touching second place by a small margin. Evan Walker (Versailles, Pa. / East Allegheny) finished seventh while Nicholas Gerencser (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) finished tenth in the 50 freestyle. Ott claimed his third first place win of the day in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 56.99. 

Mat Berger finished third in the 100 backstroke, coming in with a time of 2:43.69. Mar Berger took fifth in the 200 breastroke, clocking in 2:53.39, touching just two seconds in front of the sixth place finisher. Mona had another record breaking finish in the 400 freestyle, out touching second place by 10 seconds. Walker took fourth in the 100 butterfly, as he came in with a time of 1:11.09. 

Mar Berger and Mat Berger finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 200 IM. Mar Berger clocked in at 2:36.97 while Mat Berger clocked in at 2:39.81. In the final event of the day, the Eagles finished third in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of Walker, Kunstbeck, Mat Berger, and Mona finished with a time of 1:50.25. 

"Our men had some great swims. The freshmen competed well and stepped up to win a few races. It's good to have Juniata swimmers with some pool records already and it was a big step for our new program. I was proud of the effort and will be looking forward to be traveling to Penn St.-Altoona next weekend," said head Nathan Smith.

The team scores were as follows: 

Scranton 160. Juniata 81. 

Goucher 116. Juniata 107. 

Matt Mills of Scranton broke the previous Juniata pool record of 1:07.70 in the 100 breaststroke. Mills clocked in at 1:07.63 to take first place. Mills then broke the previous Juniata pool record of 2:39.39 in the 200 breaststroke. Mills clocked in at 2:29.41 to take first place. 

The Eagles will travel to Penn St.-Altoona on November 9th. The meet will begin at 6:00PM.
