Gaynor, Edwards Lead Eagles Past River Hawks

Gaynor, Edwards Lead Eagles Past River Hawks

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's soccer team picked up a crucial conference win over visiting Susquehanna University, 2-1, on a chilly Tuesday evening at Gibbel Stadium.

In the 37th minute, Ty Mazzarella played a ball down the right wing to Jacob Haynes, took a touch, and played the ball into the back post. Jayden Gaynor kneed the ball into the net.

The River Hawks outshot Juniata 6-4 in the first half. It was a busy half for Maxwell Mattioni, who made five saves, several of which were outstanding.

In the 71st minute, Ian Edwards was brought down in the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. Edwards stepped forward and sent the keeper left while slotting the ball into the right corner to double the Eagle lead.

This proved vital as the River Hawks were awarded a penalty in the 84th minute and converted to halve the Eagle lead.

In the 85th minute, SU was looking for an equalizer, and the ball ricocheted around following a shot deep in the Eagle box that Mattioni did well to hang on to.

In the 88th minute, Young danced through the River Hawk defense to the end line and played the ball square to Edwards, who couldn't cleanly hit the ball, and the SU keeper fell on the ball.

Juniata saw out the game to get the win and earn their second conference win of the year.

Mattioni made nine saves in goal for JC.

The Eagles return to action on the road this Saturday at Moravian. Game time is 1:00.
