Eagles Put Three Past Blazers

Eagles Put Three Past Blazers

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's soccer team was dominant for large stretches as they upended visiting Hood College, 3-1, Tuesday evening in front of a boisterous crowd at Gibbel Stadium.

Juniata created several scoring opportunities early, with Vaughn Sarago and Joseph Cianfichi taking shots early. Cianfichi's forced the Blazer keeper into making a save.

In the 23rd minute, Blake Cassel backheeled a ball in the box to Gavin Rauhut, but again the Blazer goalkeeper was up to the challenge. Malvin Madzimbamuto and Daniel O'Rourke drew saves from the Blazer goalie over the proceeding 10 minutes.

In the 38th minute, Juniata found their opening goal via Brandon Marzula. The first year bent a free-kick into the box from 27 yards out on the left side; it took a bounce before landing in the bottom right corner.

Juniata led 1-0 at the break and held a 10-4 edge in shots and a five-to-one advantage in corners.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Marzula played a ball in on a restart from the left side. Harshaan Grewal smashed the loose ball into the net to double the Eagle lead.

Six minutes later, Ian Edwards took a hit from a defender, nutmegged them, and beat another defender as he sprinted into the box before being fouled. He stepped up, sent the keeper the wrong way, and blasted the ball into the right side of the net.

The visitors did manage to get one back in the 78th minute, but Juniata closed the game down the rest of the way to lock in the win.

Juniata heads into conference play at 6-2, the best start to a campaign since 2013. They will host Moravian this Saturday at 1:00 pm.
