Men's Soccer Opens Conference Play with a Draw at Goucher

BALTIMORE, Md.- The Juniata men's soccer team opened Landmark Conference play with a 2-2 double overtime tie at Goucher, Saturday afternoon.

Jacob Grove (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Charlie Kovach (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) each netted once. Andrew Yeich (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area) made nine saves in goal for the Eagles.

Grove found the back of the net six minutes from the end of the first half to give Juniata a 1-0 lead heading into the break. 45 seconds into the second half, Kovach doubled the Juniata lead.

The Gophers would not go away, scoring on a low drive that bested Yeich in the 57th minute to pull them within one. Eight minutes later they tied things up on a header inside the box to level things at 2-2.

Both teams had opportunities to win in regulation, but both keepers made some impressive stops to force overtime. Two minutes into the first OT, Matt Matylewicz (York, Pa./Central York) put a header on net, but the keeper stopped it. The Gophers ratcheted the pressure up over the final seven minutes, forcing Yeich to make four saves to get to the second overtime. The second overtime had less shots on goal, but Yeich was called upon with three minutes left in the contest to make his final stop. Wyatt Page (King of Prussia, Pa./Shipley) put a shot on goal at the end of the game, but the keeper parried it to end the game in a tie.

The Eagles will play Penn St. Altoona, Thursday at 7:30.
