Blue Jays Take Upper Hand in Conference Play

HUNTINGDON, PA – The Juniata men's soccer team fell to the Elizabethtown Blue Jays in Landmark Conference on Winton Hill play Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays took the win 4-1 from the Eagles. Juniata falls to 2-6-1, 0-2 in the Landmark on the season.

The Eagles had many opportunities to score but the Elizabethtown defense held strong. 

Elizabethtown struck first after 25 minutes of play. Following the goal, the Blue Jays took the momentum from the half. 

Elizabethtown went up 3-0 heading into halftime. 

In the second half, the Blue Jays held an 11-9 shot advantage. Steven Stroup (Bedford, PA / Bedford) recorded three shots on goal for the Eagles, two in the first half and one in the second. 

"He gets into good spots and knows what he's supposed to do," head coach Dan Dubois said ". He's got some goals coming." 

Dani Meyer-Arrivillaga (Durham, NC / Carolina Friends) scored on a direct kick following a foul in the second half. Meyer-Arrivillaga has now scored in each of the last three games for Juniata. He recorded four shots on goal against Elizabethtown, including a header that was saved last minute by a Blue Jays' defender. 

"He's had his opportunities and will continue to get them, " Dubois said. "He's a very good player. He knows what to do in tough situations. He's going to keep his head up and continue to work." 

Nathan Woods (Huntingdon, PA / Huntingdon Area) and Jonah Ruggiero (Bangor, PA / Bangor) each recorded one shot on goal.

James Johnson (Cumberland, MD / Fort Hill) got the start in goal for the Eagles. Johnson recorded three saves in the first half. 

Achim Schwemmlein (NRW, Germany) came in to play the second half between the posts. Schwemmlein recorded five saves and gave up just one goal. 

"They (Elizabethtown) were going to continue to take a lot of opportunities," Dubois said. "We needed somebody out there to reach those corners. He played very, very well and was able to get us out of some jams."
