FROSTBURG, MD – The Juniata men's soccer team (1-1-1) took their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon to the Centenary Cyclones. The Cyclones struck first in the game and would go on to win by a final score of 3-1.

Juniata's lone goal of the game came just before the half in the 39th minute from Chandler Steffen (Lewisberry, PA / Red Land). Steffen's goal tied the game at 1 but Centenary found the back of the net just four minutes later to go up 2-1 at the half.

James Johnson (Cumberland, MD / For Hill) started in goal for the Eagles. Johnson finished with three saves and two goals allowed. Achim Schwemmlein (NRW, Germany) came in for the second period and made two saves with one goal allowed.

Centenary scored first in the 37th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Juniata was quick to respond and evened the score at 1 with a goal from Steffan, assisted by Charlie Jones (Lebanon, PA / Cedar Crest). The Cyclones would get the go-ahead goal before the half. Their final goal came early in the second period and they would take the win 3-1.

Centenary held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal and 14-12 advantage in total shots.

"We could've scored quite a few more goals than we did this weekend," head coach Dan Dubois said. "We hit the crossbar a few times and had some shots go just barely wide. We had some good opportunities."

Juniata finished with a loss and a draw at the Frostburg Tournament. Saturday night's game against Bridgewater (VA) ended in a 2-2 tie after two overtime periods.

"Both teams were like playing conference level opponents, so it was a good way to be tested," Dubois said. "Playing games within 18 hours of each other is never easy, especially with a double overtime game the night before, but it was good competition and valuable experience."

Juniata's next game is Wed. Sept. 9 against Pitt-Bradford at 2PM.
