Men’s Soccer Downed by Alfred, 1-0

FROSTBURG, MD – For the second straight game, the Juniata men's soccer team played tough defensively but in the end were denied victory as they fell to Alfred 1-0 at the Frostburg State Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Eagles to 0-2 on the young season while the Saxons are now 1-1.

The goaltender duo of Jonathan Phillips (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and James Johnson (Cumberland, MD/ Fort Hill) totaled 10 saves in the net. Both players turned away five shots.

The Eagles nearly had the game's first goal 7:24 into the first half. The shot by Steven Stroup (Bedford, PA/Bedford) hit the post.

The contest was scoreless at halftime. It remained that way until the 70th minute. A shot by Alfred's Richard Lander was saved by Johnson but a bobble in the box resulted in Kyle Craver finishing on the rebound to put AU up 1-0.

The Eagles had chances to send the game into overtime in the final minute. A shot by Stroup went wide and on a corner kick by Steven Guetzlaff (Shnecksville, PA/Parkland), Reese Fisher's (State College, PA/State College) header went high and the contest went to the Saxons.

Alfred led in shots 15-11. Juniata had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-4.

The Eagles will seek their first win of 2014 when they host St. Vincent on Tuesday. Game time from Winton Hill Field will be at 4 p.m.
