FROSTBURG, MD- The Juniata men's soccer team began its 2014 season on the road at the Frostburg State Tournament on Friday afternoon. The game was scoreless for over 100 minutes of game time until the host Bobcats scored in the second overtime to come away with a 1-0 win.
FSU led in shots 11-8 and had an 8-7 advantage in shots on
goal. The Eagles led in corner kicks, 6-2.
Eagle goalie Blaine Barsch
(Englewood, CO/Cherry Creek) was nearly flawless in goal
as he turned away seven shots. His counterpart Hassan Mostafa also
had seven saves in the net.
"We played a good match and pretty good soccer," said head
coach Dan Dubois following the game. "We can learn from it and
commit to being better tomorrow."
Juniata had opportunities early in the first half but could
not convert. Jonah Ruggiero
had a shot less than three minutes into the contest but it went
wide of the goal.
The Eagles led in shots 5-4 and in corner kicks 5-0 in the
first frame but the score would be scoreless at the half. The
Bobcats nearly scored the contest's first goal in the
51st minute but Owen Marx's shot hit the post. Frostburg
led 6-2 in shots but stellar play by Barsch including three huge
saves in the final nine minutes of regulation kept the host off the
board as the game headed into the first overtime.
Neither team would register a shot in the 10-minute period.
The Eagles got the first shot of the second extra stanza, but
Mostafa denied Chandler
Steffen's (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) attempt at 102:40.
29 second later, Hendrik de Wit hit a strike from 35 yards out that
got past Barsch and into the back of the net for the game-winning
goal.
The Eagles return to the pitch tomorrow afternoon against
either Manhattanville or Alfred. Game time will be at 1 p.m. or 3
p.m.
