Juniata men’s soccer takes 2-1 victory over Lions

ALTOONA, Pa. – Juniata men's soccer's two first half goals allowed Juniata to earn a 2-1 road victory in Altoona, Pa. against Penn State Altoona on Thursday evening in order to end a three-game losing streak.

Juniata's (6-4-0) first mark of the contest came in the 25th minute with Robby Higgins (Middletown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) finding the back of the net for his second goal of the 2012 season and was assisted by Dylan Thompson (Broomfield, Colo./Peak to Peak Charter).

The Eagles' game winner was scored by Nick Stone-Weiss (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmstead) in the 38th minute, his fifth on the season and his first game winner of his sophomore campaign. Stone-Weiss' goal was made possible by a leading pass by Chandler Steffen (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) that gave Stone-Weiss a one-on-one with the Lion's keeper, Moss Brandon.

Freshman keeper James Johnson (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) held the Lions scoreless for over 75 minutes in his first collegiate start.

The Lions managed to respond in the 76th minute when Oyler Quinn ripped a shot near the edge of the goalie box after a scramble for possession.  Johnson knocked out three of the Lions four shots on goal in 90 minutes to earn his first collegiate win.

Juniata had 12 shots in the 90 minutes of play with half of the being on target, while Penn State Altoona recorded 10 shots and four on goal.

The Eagles begin Landmark Conference play at Goucher College on Saturday, September 29.
