Juniata men’s soccer can’t seal the deal versus USMMA

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata men's soccer responded quickly to a United States Merchant Marine first half goal and held off the Mariners for the remainder of regulation, but Juniata eventually allowed a goal at the 107th minute to drop its Landmark Conference opener 2-1.

Juniata's (5-4-0) only goal of the day came in the 29th minute, just four minutes following the Mariners first mark, by unassisted Dane Azeles (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) for his sixth goal of the season.

Juniata took just eight shots in the game, nearly nine less than they normally rip in 90 minutes, while Merchant Marine (5-3) recorded 17 shots, only six of which were on mark.

The Eagles' goalkeeper, Ezra Cassel (Denver, Pa./Cocalico), registered four saves in the loss and allowed both Mariner goals.

Merchant Marine's goals were scored by Nick Vogel, assisted by Mark Bloom in the 25th minute, and Kurt Olsen, who recorded the game winner in the 107th minute and was unassisted.

Juniata will travel to Penn State Altoona for a 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 27, match. The Eagles resume Landmark Conference play at Goucher College on Saturday, September 29.
