Men’s soccer rebounds against Thiel and claims 3-1 win

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College men's soccer team blasted 21 shots, three of which found the back of the net, to take away a 3-1 win at Winton Hill Field Saturday afternoon over Thiel College.

Juniata scored first in the match in the 17th minute when senior Greg Hess (Hanover, Pa./South Western) received a sophomore Robby Higgins (Middletown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) pass in front of the Thiel goal.

The Eagles tacked on one more before the end of the first half in the 41st minute with a Nick Stone-Weiss (North Olmstead, Ohio, North Olmstead) goal assisted by Chandler Steffen (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land).

The Tomcats managed to respond in the 55th minute with a header goal by Paulo Fernandez that was just beyond Juniata keeper Ezra Cassel's (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) reach. However, the Eagles extinguished all hope that Thiel might have had in the 77th minute when junior Seth Ruggiero (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) wound-up and ripped a shot from just a few yards shy of half-field that soared into the top of the net.

Cassel recorded two saves in all 90 minutes of play, as did Thiel's keeper.

Juniata faces Saint Vincent College at home on Wednesday, September 5 at Winton Hill Field at 4:00 p.m.
