Scranton’s first half surge leads Royals past Juniata men’s soccer

SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton scored three times in the first half and its way to a 4-1 win over Juniata College, Saturday afternoon in Scranton, Pa.

The Royals' Ray Straccia opened the scoring with his penalty kick goal in the 13th minute, with Michael Drew  and Gus Esgro tacking on additional Scranton goals in the 22nd and 37th minutes respectively. Justin Canning built the Scranton lead to 4-0 with his goal in the 64th minute.

Juniata (5-8-1, 0-3-1 Landmark) ended Scranton's shutout bid in the 69th minute, when Evan LaTourrette (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) scored off an assist from Jeremy Donaldson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock).

The Royals outshot Juniata 17-8, and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Eagle keeper Ted Sonneborn (Syracuse, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) recorded six saves while allowing all four goals over 90 minutes, while Scranton split the keeping duties between Brandon Dombrowski and Justin Frick. Dombrowski logged five saves with one goal allowed over 75 minutes, while Frick was unchallenged over 15 minutes in the goal.

Juniata will host Susquehanna University on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 4:00 p.m. on Winton Hill Field in Huntingdon.
