Matt Baer Named Head Coach of Juniata Golf Program

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- Juniata Athletics has selected Matt Baer to lead its golf program as it prepares for varsity competition beginning in the 2017-18 season. Baer will lead both a men’s and women’s team.

For the men, it marks the first time in over 20 years that Juniata will field a team. Men’s golf was previously a varsity program at Juniata from 1947-1994. JC won three conference championships when it competed in the Middle Atlantic Conference.

“I think having a golf program here in Huntingdon is pretty exciting,” said Baer. “I think it will benefit the college. I can already sense the excitement in the community about the program.”

Baer currently is an assistant coach with the Eagles baseball team. “I think my baseball background brings a lot to the table and I have the ability to make the golf program a competitive program,” Baer stated.

Baer played golf in high school. Baseball was the sport he decided to pursue and after his career was complete, he took up golf again. Baer has competed in local qualifiers and tournaments around the state and has won three Huntingdon County Golf Championships.

Juniata will practice at the range at Standing Stone Golf Club and will also use the course at Huntingdon Country Club. The Eagles will compete at club status before achieving varsity status.

There has been already been a current and significant interest from the campus in the golf programs. Anyone with interest in joining can contact Coach Baer at baerm@juniata.edu
