Eagles Can't Elude Sting of Hornets

John Kelly put up the first double-double of his career as he amassed 13 points and 11 rebounds on the road at Shenandoah, Tuesday evening.

WINCHESTER, VA- The Juniata men's basketball team suffered a 66-50 loss on the road at Shenandoah inside the James R. Wilkins Jr. Athletics and Events Center, Tuesday evening.  

Cameron Keck (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) scored the first points of the game via jumper to put the Eagles up 2-0, 45 seconds into the game. After the Hornets drilled a three, Keck rattled home one of his own off a pass from John Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa. / Roman Catholic High School) and Nathan Markey (York, Pa. / Central York) converted from the midrange to put the Eagles up 7-5 early.  

The teams traded buckets, with Shenandoah pulling even at 10-10 at the 15-minute mark. 

Neither team scored for a few minutes the Hornets converted another three. The Eagles answered again, this time Jake Holsopple (Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) drilled a three of a pass from Kohl Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa. / Cochranton H.S.). 

An and-one followed by a three for the Hornets put them up six, prior to a Kelly jumper off a pass from Nate DaCanal (Johnsonburg, Pa. / Elk County Catholic) made it 19-15. 

The Hornets hit another three before Kelly split a pair of foul shots, scored inside off a feed from Holsopple and nailed a jumper after corralling an offensive rebound to make it 22-20 Hornets. 

Marcus Hall (York, Pa. / Trinity) lay in following another Holsopple assist cut the deficit to three, 25-22, with just under three minutes to go.  

The Hornets scored the final four points of the half as they led, 29-22, at halftime. 

The Eagles scored seven unanswered points in a little over a minute on a Kelly layup off a pass from Hall, Markey found Bernarding for a three and Hall nailed a jumper to tie things at 29-29. 

Kelly scored inside to give Juniata their first lead since early in the first half.  

The Hornets scored six straight before a DaCanal set Keck up for another three to make it 37-34  with just over 14 minutes to go in the contest. Charles Somerville III (Hagerstown, Md. / St. Maria Goretti H.S.) converted a jumper to bring the Eagles within one. 

Shenandoah split a pair of foul shots before Hall scored just inside of ten minutes made it 38-38. 

From that point, the Hornets outscored the Eagles 28-12 as Juniata couldn't keep up down the stretch.  

Juniata returns to action, Sunday at 2:00 against Gettysburg.
