Juniata’s Berkey named ECAC South Division III Player of the Week

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College junior Jeff Berkey (Stoystown, Pa./Shanksville-Stonycreek) has been named the ECAC South Region Division III Men's Basketball Player of the Week, for the week ending February 15, 2009.

Berkey, who earned Landmark Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday, produced a career-high 29 points in Juniata's 79-75 overtime win over Drew University, including eight of the Eagles' 13 points in the extra frame. He was 7-of-12 from the field against the Rangers, with an 11-of-12 mark at the free throw line. The next night, Berkey scored 17 points in a 79-77 overtime loss to Merchant Marine. 

For the week, Berkey shot .500 (13-26) from the field, and was 15-of-16 (.938) at the line. He also tallied eight rebounds and four assists during the week. 

Berkey is currently second on the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game, and is Juniata's top three-point shooting threat with 52 treys and a .394 shooting percentage beyond the arc. 

Headquartered in Centerville, Mass., the ECAC is the nation's largest athletic conference with 321 member institutions in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions across Divisions I, II, and III. The Division III South Region in men's basketball is made up mostly of institutions from the Landmark, Centennial, Commonwealth, Freedom, Colonial States, Presidents, and Allegheny Mountain conferences. 

Juniata (7-17, 5-8 Landmark) wraps up its season this Saturday, Feb. 21, when it hosts archrival Susquehanna University at 7:30 p.m. at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center.
