Eagles Outdueled by Red Devils

CARLISLE, Pa.- The Juniata field hockey team fell three goals behind early before finishing with a 4-1 defeat to Dickinson College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Red Devils opened the scoring log within four minutes, working the ball directly in front of the goal and placing the ball to the left of the diving keeper. They ended the first period with five shots, while Juniata could not register one in the first.

Dickinson doubled their advantage by earning a penalty stroke in the 21st minute of play. Amanda Puza went in the right direction, but the ball was buried past her with pace into the top-left corner for a 2-0 lead. Dickinson found one more a few minutes later for a 3-0 lead. Puza made the initial save on a shot from 15 yards out, but the ball was deflected directly to a Red Devils player who could find a gap at the near post.

The Eagles got one back via a Sydney Witter penalty stroke in the 28th minute. Witter fired directly down the middle to beat the goalkeeper, who went slightly to their right. Dickinson ended the first half by outshooting Juniata 13-3.

The Red Devils added a fourth in the waning moments of the third quarter, making use of a long-range shot saved by Brittney McMullen to square a ball to an unmarked player on the left-hand side for an easy finish.

Puza ended the first half of the game with six saves. McMullen saved five of six shots taken in the second half. Witter had three of Juniata's five shots in the game. Dickinson ended the afternoon having tested the Juniata keepers and defense with 15 shots on goal.

The Eagles start Landmark Conference play this Saturday, September 16th, as they head to the nation's capital to face #22 Catholic at 1:00 p.m.
