Lanigan's Goal in OT Lifts Eagles Above River Hawks

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- Juniata field hockey defeated Susquehanna, 2-1 in overtime on a chilly Wednesday evening.

The first half was scoreless as Juniata led 2-1 in shots. In the 21st minute, in the second quarter, Grace Woolway (Lewisburg, Pa. / Lewisburg Area) took a shot from the right side but it was blocked by a Susquehanna defender. In the last minute of the second quarter the Eagles tried to get on the board as Woolway took another shot from the middle but it was saved by the River Hawks goalie. 

Susquehanna started off the third quarter with a goal in the 32nd minute. About a minute later, the Eagles answered back with a goal of their own to tie things up, 1-1. Sarah Alexander (Mifflinburg, Pa. / Mifflinburg) came from the left side along the goal line and passed the ball to Catherine Lanigan (Parsippany, N.J. / Parsippany HS). Lanigan tapped in the ball from the right side of the goal. In the 39th minute, Juniata tried to extend their lead when Lanigan fired a shot high but the River Hawks goalie tipped the ball out for a save. 

At the end of regulation the score was tied at 1-1 forcing the teams to go into overtime. Susquehanna took the first two chances at the goal but one shot was saved by Grace Kuszmaul (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) and the other by Nicole Piccioni (Richfield, Pa. / Midd-West). In the 63rd minute, S. Alexander assisted Lanigan for the game winning goal. 

The Eagles held a 10-5 edge in shots over the River Hawks and an 8-3 edge in corners. 

Juniata travels to Catholic this Saturday for a Landmark match up at 5:30 pm.
