Juniata Wins in Shootout Over Elizabethtown, Cliches Three Seed in Landmark Playoffs

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.- The Juniata field hockey team emerged victorious from their second shootout of the week as they defeated Elizabethtown, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field.

Lindsay Scholten (Apex, N.C. / Brookfield)Grace Kuszmaul (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown), and Catherine Lanigan (Boonton, N.J. / Parsippany HS) each scored once for the Eagles. Katie Alexander (Mifflinburg, Pa. / Mifflinburg) totaled two assists. Kylie Edwards (Danville, Pa./Danville) had six saves and stopped four of five penalty strokes. 

Elizabethtown struck twice in the opening 14 minutes as they completely dominated the the first half and went into the break up 2-0. Juniata flipped the script in the second, with K. Alexander setting up Scholten three minutes into the second half to narrow the gap. Scholten's shot was deflated into the air and over the keeper to make it 2-1. Kuszmaul scored on a penalty stroke to tie things up at 2-2, but the Blue Jays scored a little over a minute later to retake the lead at 3-2. In the 49th minute, K. Alexander got the ball to Lanigan who redirected it into the cage to tie the score up at 3-3. The teams remained deadlocked after regulation and two overtime periods, so the Eagles headed to their second straight shootout.

The first two shooters missed for both teams before Kuszmaul converted her shootout goal. The teams exchanged misses before Elizabethtown converted their fourth shootout goal. Mina Wilt (Wells Tannery, Pa./Forbes Road) beat the Blue Jay keeper and then Edwards denied Elizabethtown one last time to complete the victory.

Juniata finishes the year 11-6 and third in the Landmark. They will play at Scranton, Wednesday at 7:00.
