Juniata Wins in Shootout Thriller Over Washington and Jefferson

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata field hockey team needed two overtimes and eventually a shootout to take down Washington & Jefferson, 2-1, on a cold night at Knox Stadium.

Katie Alexander (Mifflinburg, Pa. / Mifflinburg) tallied the lone goal for the Eagles during regulation while Grace Alexander (Mifflinburg, Pa. / Mifflinburg) tallied one assist for the game. Kylie Edwards (Danville, Pa./Danville) had an outstanding game in goal for the Eagles, stopping four shots during the shutout and a penalty stroke at the end of the first half.

The teams were scoreless through the first half of the game. Edwards turned away three shots during the first half to keep the score at 0-0. The Eagles took two shots in the first half, but neither found the back of the cage. A minute into the second half, their fortunes changed as G. Alexander setup K. Alexander to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Presidents tied the score with eight minutes remaining, and forcing the game into overtime. The teams remained deadlocked, so the game went into a shootout.

Grace Kuszmaul (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) wound up scoring the winner after the previous attempt made by Mina Wilt (Wells Tannery, Pa. / Forbes Road) resulted in a penalty stroke.

The Eagles held a 14-6 edge in shots and a 10-2 edge in penalty corners.

Juniata wraps up their regular season on the road, Saturday at Elizabethtown. Game time is 1:00.
