Eagles Edge #18 Alvernia 2-1

READING, Pa. – The Juniata field hockey team won 2-1 at #18 Alvernia University Sunday afternoon to improve to 2-0 on the year.

The teams went scoreless through the first 22 minutes of the game until sophomore Catherine Lanigan (Boonton, NJ/Parsippany HS) sent a shot off the goalie only to rebound the ball and find the back of the cage to put the Eagles up 1-0.

Both the Eagles and the Golden Wolves were back and forth for the remainder of the first half, each team logging four shots. Junior Kylie Edwards (Danville, Pa./Danville) recorded three saves before breaking at the half, and Juniata's defense held strong to keep Alvernia scoreless.

In the 64th minute, Juniata's Sarah Alexander (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) made a break and scored off of Katie Alexander's (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) assist to put the Eagles up 2-0. Four minutes later, Alvernia swung hard, sending a long ball that hit off the goalie and was rebounded by Adriene Welsh for a Golden Wolves' goal. Juniata's defense was able to hold Alvernia to one in the closing minutes of the game to seal the victory 2-1.

Alvernia led in total shots 7-5 and had a sizable advantage in penalty corners, 11-3. 

Edwards recorded four saves total throughout the game.

The Eagles travel to Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 6. The team will return home on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 2:00pm to face The College of New Jersey.
