LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Juniata field hockey head coach Caroline Gillich and the 1995 Lock Haven field hockey team were inducted into the Lock Haven University Athletics Hall of Fame June 5.

The 1995 team finished the season with a perfect 21-0-0 record and went on to win the NCAA Division II National Championship with a 1-0 final over Bloomsburg.

Following the impressive season, head coach Sharon Taylor received Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and National Coach of the Year honors. Gillich's teammate Mel Helm received PSAC Player of the Year honors and seven athletes were named to the All-PSAC. Gillich received First Team All-PSAC honors.

Gillich, captain of the 1995 team, received First Team All-America honors and was named a Honda-Broderick Cup nominee. The Honda-Broderick Cup is presented to the top collegiate field hockey player in the nation.

"It is a tremendous honor for our 1995 LHU Field Hockey team to be inducted into the 2nd Hall of Fame Class at the Haven," Gillich said. "There is a rich History of Athletics there. Many players and teams have received the highest recognitions during their collegiate years and many have gone on from there to do even more nationally and internationally in their athletic careers. It was a tremendous opportunity to celebrate what a group of 18-22 year olds did over 20 years ago, to get back together again, with our friends and families and just enjoy our time together seamlessly."

Gillich finished her collegiate career with two First Team All-America honors, two First Team All-PSAC honors, two PSAC Championships and two National Championships. She holds the Lock Haven record for number of shutouts in a single season at 15, goals-against-average in a single season at 0.280 and career goals-against-average at .420.

Ann (Grim) Showers, mother of Juniata field hockey's Kortney Showers '14, was also inducted into the Lock Haven Hall of Fame. Ann was a three-sport athlete at LHU and graduated in 1984. She played on two National Championship field hockey teams and one runner-up team.  Like Gillich, Ann also was nominated for the Honda-Broderick Cup Award. Ann was the only NCAA Division II athlete to receive First Team All-America honors in 1982 and 1983.

"The only way the weekend could have been better, is exactly what happened," Gillich said. "Ann (Grim) Showers who is one of LHU's best athletes of all time was inducted into the Hall of Fame for her accomplishments in field hockey. She is someone that I knew of during my time as a player at LHU and I've had the pleasure to get to know her and her family so well. Her daughter, Kortney, chose to play field hockey for me at Juniata and did an amazing job. She captained our 2014 team that went the longest distance to win a Landmark Conference Championship. We played three games that went into double overtime in a week's time. Kortney's leadership led that team to be as strong, courageous and resilient as they needed to be to just keep believing and pull out that championship win. I could not be more proud to share that day with Ann and her family. It is amazing how our lives have intersected and I am so glad to feel that bond grow even stronger."
