Salisbury, Md., Juniata's field hockey team
saw its run to the program's first NCAA Division III title come to
an end on Saturday in a 3-0 loss to 8th ranked Wellesley
in the Sweet Sixteen. The team came one round shy of the Elite
Eight, the furthest any Eagles team has advanced in the NCAA
tournament.
The Blue entered the game having lost only two contests all
season and would prove to be a difficult foe. Wellesley scored just
over three minutes into the game to take an early lead. Courtney
Peterson assisted on the score and would add two of her own just
before the half, to put the Eagles in a 3-0 hole.
Juniata's defense shut the Blue down the rest of the way, but
the offense was unable to come to life, as the Eagles were shutout
for just the fourth time this season. The Blue and Gold could only
muster two shots and were allowed only two penalty corners, while
Wellesley totaled eight shots and nine corners.
The Eagles magical run and season has come to a close, but
this is a season that will go down as one of the finest in program
history. Juniata defeated #7 Catholic twice, once in the Landmark
Championship game, to claim the conference title and put an end to
the Cardinals' three year reign. More on the season to
follow.
