Joe Battaglia is in his second season of his second stint on the Juniata football staff, after previously serving as a defensive backs coach during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Battaglia rejoined the staff as the Eagles' defensive coordinator, and will continue to serve in that capacity in 2012.
Under Battaglia’s tutelage, the Juniata defense allowed
nearly 33 fewer yards per game in 2011 than it had the previous
season. Battaglia spent the 2010 season on the staff at Stevenson
University, helping start-up the Mustangs' football program that
began play in 2011 and coaching the Stevenson linebackers.
During his first stint at Juniata, Battaglia helped guide former
Eagle cornerback Andy Miller to All-Centennial Conference honors in
2009. Miller finished the season with 37 tackles, including 31 solo
stops, with one interception and 10 pass break-ups.
Battaglia previously served as an intern on the defensive staffs
at both Guilford College (N.C.) and Towson University.
A 2008 graduate of Guilford with a degree in sports management,
Battaglia was a four-year letterwinner as a linebacker and
defensive back for the Quakers. As a captain during his junior and
senior seasons, the Quakers earned back-to-back winning seasons for
the first time in a decade.
Battaglia is the second generation of his family to pursue a
career in coaching; he follows in the footsteps of his father, Buzz
Battaglia, who currently coaches at The Gilman School in
Baltimore.
Recruiting Areas: Maryland,
D.C., Virginia, and Delaware.
