Football Defeated by #10 Johns Hopkins, 56-14

BALTIMORE, MD- Juniata trailed #10 Johns Hopkins 14-7 early in the second quarter but the Blue Jays scored four straight touchdowns on their way to a 56-14 win on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. The loss drops the Eagles to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the Centennial Conference while Hopkins remains undefeated at 5-0 and 4-0 in the conference.

 

Quarterback Ward Udinski (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) passed for 220 yards on 30-of-40 attempts with one touchdown throw but he also had two interceptions. He was the team's leading rusher with 38 yards on 12 carries.

 

On the receiving end, Isaiah Slutter (Philadelphia, PA/Wallenpaupack Area) and Kirby Breault (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) both caught five passes for 93 yards. Breault had a touchdown reception.

 

The Blue Jays went ahead 14-0 in the first quarter on its first two possessions. In the beginning of the second period, the Eagles put together a solid drive as it moved inside Hopkins' territory. On second and 2 from the Blue Jays' 25, Udinski connected with Breault for the score and with Kevin Bonalle's (Lebanon, PA/Cedra Crest) extra point, it was 14-7 Johns Hopkins with 13:12 to play.

 

It was close as the Eagles would get as the top-ranked Blue Jays scored touchdowns on four straight possessions. Deonte Alston (Bel-Air, MD/Patterson Mill) had JC's only other score with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter on a one-yard run. Alston finished with 20 yards on four carries.

 

The Blue Jays totaled 316 yards on the ground while the Eagles were held to just 87. Hopkins' offense had 544 total yards to Juniata's 339.

 

Defensively, Ethan Wilt (Altoona, PA/Altoona Area) was in on 12 tackles to lead JC. Jake Diviney (Altoona, PA/Altoona Area) had eight tackles. Demetrius Floyd (Corapolis, PA/West Allegheny) had six tackles and a forced fumble.

 

Juniata is off next week. The Eagles return to action on October 18 at Knox Stadium on Homecoming Day against Ursinus. Game time is at 12 p.m.
