Juniata Baseball Drops Conference Doubleheader to Greyhounds

HUNTINGDON, Pa. –The Moravian Greyhounds took two from the Juniata Eagles on Senior Day with a 10-5 victory in game one and 11-0 in game two.

Moravian brought out the bats immediately and jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two. The Greyhounds packed on four more in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Juniata found their spark. Joe Klusman (Wilmington, Del. / St. Elizabeth) led off with a single through the left side. Isaac Kline (Everett, Pa. / Bedford) followed with a single to left. Chris Schreder (Litiz, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) then loaded the bases with a single out to right center.

Designated hitter David DeFreest (Duxburry, Vt. / Harwood Union) hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to put the Eagles on the board. Chris Sinisi (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona Area) hit a laser down the left field line to bring in Kline. With runners in scoring position, Devyn Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona Area) hit a bases-clearing double to cut the Greyhounds' lead in half.

After tossing 4.0 innings, Jesse Beeler (Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle-Antrim) was relieved by Jon Geyer (Newport, Pa. / Newport) to start the fifth.

The Greyhounds would be kept off the board until the top of the sixth when Cameron Leon blasted a 2-run homer out to left field.

The score would remain locked at 10-4 until the bottom of the seventh.

With one out, Nick Stubbs (Hagerstown, Md. / South Hagerstown) hit an infield single. Anthony Lombardo (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona Area) ripped a double down the left field line and Stubbs turned on the wheels to make it a 10-5 game. The Greyhounds quickly stifled the Juniata rally and would take game one by a 10-5 final.

Game two began as a pitcher's duel between Caleb Pepperday (Phillipsburg, Pa. / Phillipsburg-Osceola) and Moravian's Ryan Hahn. Through three innings, neither team had been able to pick up more than one hit.

Moravian was able to get on the board first when they capitalized on a Juniata error. Pepperday and the Eagles' defense tightened up and got out of the inning with the Greyhounds up 1-0.

In the top of the fifth, Moravian would bring in one more on a single up the middle with two outs.

The Greyhounds opened up the offense in the top of the sixth with two outs when two pairs of 2-run homers would bring Ichiro Narita (Brooklyn, N.Y. Brooklyn Latin) to the mound for the Eagles. Moravian would leave the inning with an 8-0 lead.

Alex Matoushek (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton) closed out the game on the mound for Juniata.

Moravian would add on three in the seventh to win by a final score of 11-0.

Picking up hits for the Eagles in game two were Stubbs, Lombardo and Schreder.

Juniata and Moravian close out the series with a single 9-inning game Sun. April 24 at noon. It will be the Eagles final home game of the 2016 season.
