Juniata Splits on Road with Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Juniata College baseball team split its doubleheader Saturday on the road at Moravian College to continue Landmark Conference play.  Juniata (4-11, 1-2 Landmark) won game one (7-6) in the 11th inning but fell 6-2 in the night cap.

Junior Joe Sforza (Pittstown, N.J./Immaculata) and freshman Chris Sinisi (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) finished with three hits apiece.  Senior Josh Green (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) earned his first win of the year after pitching four scoreless innings and striking out two.

Juniata was up 4-3 in game one when Moravian rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead.  With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Sforza singled to left center, scoring junior Brad Medellin (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) to pull the Eagles within one.  Greyhound pitcher Ben Hammel then walked in the game tying run before ending the Eagles rally.

The teams then played through three scoreless innings.  Senior Ben Mersky (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) led off the 11th inning with a single through the right side and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Medellin.  Moving to third when the next batter grounded out, Mersky cruised across the plate after sophomore Cody Krepps (Tyrone, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) slipped a single through the left side.

Medellin came in to pitch in the bottom of the inning and helped the defense close out the game and the win to earned his first save of the season.

Moravian came out on fire in game two, taking a 5-0 lead in the second inning.  The Eagles put two runs on the board in the fourth, but could not close the lead down.  Sinisi went 2-for-3 and had an RBI.  Sophomore Chris Fulton (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) pitched a complete six innings.

Juniata closes its series against Moravian on Sunday, March 24 at 12 p.m.
